Faux Shiplap Complete!

Writer's picture: KenzieKenzie

We can DIY it! Part 14 of this overly long drawn out closet built and it's looking pretty darn good I must say myself. As usual, if you're new here, check out some of the previous posts on this build below.

One Room Challenge turned 6 month challenge... and dear lord do I need a break once this is done! But, the shiplap is all up! Would you believe me if I told you this was all 1/4" plywood spaced with a straight edge? I've shocked a few who have said just poly it and leave it natural. But as anyone who's followed this build knows, it doesn't fit my color scheme at all. Toto we're not in New England anymore! All of the shiplap will be Sherwin Williams Indigo Batik, and it's 100% a trust the process moment.

Of course I had to sign the wall for me and the fur monsters, the cats have to be involved especially after Scooby's game of Blues Clues that I believe I mentioned in the previous part.

One of the things I'm most proud about this shiplap step is that white corner, as you can see it originally was round, which was going to make the shiplap a tad difficult. I don't know where I saw the idea, but someone mentioned flipping cove molding upside down and gosh darn it worked perfectly! My round corner is now square!

So. Much. Wood. But I swear it's going to look great! I decided to shiplap the wonky diagonal wall between the pax units because the ankles were all wonky and I couldn't get a template that worked. So instead i'll just throw some hooks there as well.

Last up for this weekend was building the final upper storage box. Of course building this final one I remembered I had corner clamps... this would have saved me SO much time earlier. But better late than never, I'll remember for next time I need them.

And my last find for the weekend was a round mirror for over the dresser. 50% off at Hobby Lobby and my neighbors had given me a giftcard for Xmas, so this was an awesome find! This will get mounted in the center above this dresser, and it should look great... this photo was of course taken before finishing the shiplap here, but rest assured it is complete!

Now let's talk about this blue dresser top. It looks great in pictures, and matches perfectly. However, in person, it is very very yellow. It just doesn't have the look that I'm going for. So, sadly, I'm scrapping the blue stain idea and will paint it white to match the rest of the dresser.

So that's where I left off for the weekend. Up next is refinishing the dresser top and skim coating the walls behind the pax... that seems to be the easiest way to get the finish I need.

The other finishes are saved in my amazon wishlist, home depot cart, etc. Getting closer to being able to trim this out and paint... I can't wait.

Light at the end of the tunnel is slowly getting closer, I don't know what I'll do with my weekends when I'm done with this, cause I'm sure as heck not jumping into another big build for a little bit...

Happy Monday (ugh)
