If you give a girl a power tool...

Writer's picture: KenzieKenzie

It's no coincidence that my favorite book growing up was "If You Give a Mouse a Cookie" because gosh darn it everything I do spirals out of control, but usually in a good way. If you're new here, check out the previous posts for this custom closet build!

Welcome to my latest brain dump, and per usual... my mind keeps changing! UGH!

Let me describe my thought process just a little bit. I love my older sister, but her first townhouse, I remember her painting every room in her place a different bright color. Her master was purple with the gold marbling technique, her dining room was a berry color, downstairs bath was 2 toned blue, and her workout room was tangerine. As a kid I LOVED it, the fam gets a good laugh out of the memory. Sidenote though, her Christmas decorations are goals. But, since I got my first place, the joke has been to not be like her, and I've realized I'm well on my way.

Why? Well. While I may not be using berry and tangerine, I already have 4 different shades of blue... and I need to make sure everything works together. I have plans for my living room, my laundry room, and obviously this closet. So what colors was I looking at? Different shades of blues! So, alrighty, I need to tie everything together a bit... make the place a little more cohesive... and that starts with this closet.

So. My original plan for this closet, was a "coastal glam" style and it turned into a Cinderella vibe wanting light light blue and white and a glam light. While the rest of my house I've had a Hamptons/Florida coastal vibe mix.

How am I going to tie it all together? Well. It begins with how my master is currently painted and what my vision for the living room has been. I love navy and white. I always have, so I'm thinking I need to keep this color scheme in pieces throughout the house. I need to tie in Sherwin Williams "In the Navy" and "Dockside Blue" into whatever I choose. Sidenote, my guest room is "50% Tame Teal" and my craft room is "Cloudless." No room is 100% painted, the majority of things are still "Extra White."

In addition to the different colors, I have 3 different types of flooring in the house, the closet is a LVP called Lake Agnes Oak, the main house is Mowhawk's Oceanside cottage, and the Guest/Graft Room are a grey carpet. Don't come at me for my "grey" floors, they hide cat fur really well and as much as I wanted tile throughout, it wasn't in the budget for the spare rooms.

So if you've followed this far... we're gonna throw out the spare rooms cause they can be whatever they want... so that leaves us with these...

So here we have left to right: In the Navy, Extra White, Dockside Blue, Oceanside Cottage Porcelain tile and Lake Agnes Oak LVP

The closet needs to tie in with the master bedroom, but it doesn't have to be exact... so where does that leave my brain? Introducing Indigo Batik.

This color is a little more grey than In the Navy, and acts as an in-between color for Dockside Blue and In the Navy. I have another idea of where to use this color in the house as well, but that idea is still forming. Anyways. The latest idea is to keep all the wardrobe units Extra White, because I already have that paint color from previous projects in both Satin and Semi-Gloss. But, the remaining walls, Indigo Batik faux shiplap. This color works with the new light fixture, and I was already planning on doing black framed mirrors. So the mixed metal of chrome and black should suite this color palette well. This color scheme feels much more me, those who know me know I wear navy, white or black 99% of the time (Nittany Lion represent, We Are!)

Mom's on board. But anyways let's list out what's left to give ya'll and idea how much work this is and what's left to do... there's a lot

  • Build Upper Cabinets

  • Build Corner Shelves

  • Base molding and corner round

  • Fill holes/dents

  • Trim

  • Faux Shiplap

  • Prime/Paint

  • Drawer Knobs

  • Mirrors

  • Rug Runner

  • Sconce/Vanity Light?

  • Clothes rods

That's all I got for my lunchtime brain dump here, there's still a lot more ideas brewing but trying to keep those at bay until this overly complicated project is finished. Let's hope this idea sticks. Only time will tell, now I just need to get my butt going on building those uppers... first time using a handheld circular saw, it's an experience.

Happy Hump Day, halfway to Friday

PS.

If you give a girl a power tool, she's going to make her pinterest addiction reality.

If her pinterest addiction comes to life, she'll make Home Depot trips all the time.

If she goes to Home Depot all the time, she's going to blow her budget.

If she blows her budget, did she even have one? But she'll get the project mostly done

Before she gets the project done, she's going to come up with 10 more projects

If she comes up with 10 more projects, she's going to ask for more power tools.
