One Room Challenge Fail... sort of?
Okay maybe not really because at least I had started this project. If you're new here, check out the previous weeks for this Coastal Closet Build.
Okay let's recap what's happened since "week 7." My last post was early November... and now it's mid January. Long story short? The holidays got the best of me. I love the holiday season. October through New Years is the best time of the year but boy is it exhausting! Since I was 10 years old, my sister and I have been doing crazy Christmas lights, we started at my parents house. She bought her most recent house around 2010, and has developed her huge display in Concord, NH. Check out Petersen Circle online if you get the chance, it's worth a look!
Now that I have my own house, I have been building my own light display, and I am proud to say I have won Best Overall in the neighborhood Christmas light contest, and this year I won best Small Display for Viera West in the Viera Bright Lights Battle!
So. As you can tell, I had to take a break from this closet to make Christmas happen. But it's a new year and we are BACK!
And when I say we... I mean it took me this long to bribe my best friend with pizza for help. But big news.
WE ARE VERTICAL!
The ikea units are up, and mounted! It was so much easier to build these units and stand them up with a second set of hands. Plus having a second brain really helped my squirrel brain when it came to figuring out where to mount these where studs weren't available.
So. The molding is out, the ikea units are up, the dresser is in. What's next?
I had no idea what I was getting into when I started this project by myself, I'm having fun learning as I go, but I should have took the time allotted for the challenge and multiplied it by 10.
Here's what's left:
Dresser Modifications | New Light Fixture | Trim out units | Accent Walls | Mirrors | Overhead Storage Solution | Paint | Reveal
Dresser Modifications
The plan for the dresser is to chop off the legs and trim the top so it is flush with the rest of the unit. Hopefully this will make it easier to trim out and look more seamless with the rest of the units. It is about 3 inches deeper than the wardrobes, but oh well. I'll make it work.
New Light Fixture
Originally I was planning on going with a frosted glass semi flush mount light...but after seeing it in person I didn't think it would give off enough light. I only have one light in the closet and it's a decent sixed space.
Instead I found this 13" light from Home Depot on sale and it matched the acrylic knobs my mom gave me
for the dresser. (The dresser currently has
2 different types of knobs cause I was trying them out...) Anyways, this fit the coastal glam style I've been going for so we'll see what it looks like up this weekend, hopefully! Light Linked Here
Trim Out Units
I think this one is pretty self explanatory... this one will take a LOT or work to make everything look seamless. Going to be lots of caulk and trips to home depot for pre primed pineboard.... wish me luck.
Accent Wall
This is still in progress, but I'm learning towards doing a shiplap wall between the 2 wardrobe units and over the dresser.
But Kenz shiplap is SOO out and will make your house look dated.
Shush. I like it, it's only in a small spot. And I want my closet to make me feel like I'm a princess on vacation, ya'll can understand that right?
Mirrors
The plan is to have 2 mirrors in the closet. Some sort of floor length and then a round one over the dresser mounted on the accent walls. I haven't figured out what kind of full length mirror I want yet.
My best friend is rooting for a big arch, my mom says I'm crazy and this is all too expensive.
But. The round mirror... I LOVE this one from Pottery Barn, Lowes actually also has the same one by a different brand. but it's over $200. So I believe I can dupe it myself... stay tuned to see how that goes.
Overhead Storage Solution
In the middle of all of this... before painting... I need to figure out what's going on above the units. I haven't taken an exact measurement since putting the ikea units up. But I want to be able to put baskets above and would love to go all the way to the ceiling. I'm between building something myself out of plywood or buying the 11" cube storage from target and doing a hack out of that... the brilliant idea hasn't quite come to me yet. But it will... I hope
Paint
Let me start off by saying, this is not an ad. I buy all the samples myself. But, samplize. These things are awesome. It's a sticker that has been painted in the paint color you request and they are reusable!
In my earlier posts I had a bunch of regular paint samples, as seen on the left in paint sample pictures before. All paint colors are Sherwin Williams. The top left is 50% aviary blue, the bottom left is 50% bathe blue. The samplize stickers are the middle and right columns. From top to bottom left to right the samplize colors are: Snowdrop, Iceberg, Sky High, and Topsail.
I have a few different ideas how these colors could work. As a Nittany Lion, blue and white always win my heart.
Idea 1: Iceberg shelving and pure white (not shown) walls
Idea 2: Pure white shelving and sky high walls
Idea 3: Iceberg shelving and iceberg walls
I love the idea of painting all the ikea units the Iceberg color. It gives me a Cinderella meets Princess Diaries vibe. And in that case I would do the DIY mirror in the same color. With white shiplap accents? It just gives me the coastal vibe in my head. My real mom agrees with me, my Florida mom and best friend think I'm nuts. But in the end they have to trust my vision, after all the teal guest room? They all thought I was bananas and look how amazing that turned out! Still my favorite room in the house so far!
Reveal
So. When will it be done? I'm hoping by the end of February... Before my mom's birthday on March 8 would be ideal. Maybe I can convince her to come visit, after all this year is her 70th and my 30th. (Granted mine isn't until September, I'm going to own 29 as long as I can...) Anyways. Big one for her and what better to spend it in the Florida sunshine? So. Stay tuned. I'm showing you all the real timeline of DIY projects, but follow along on Instagram and Tiktok. If you like making mistakes and seeing floofy cats, it's the place to be!
Thanks for sticking with me this long, this closet WILL get done eventually and it WILL be amazing!
Cheers to finishing all the DIY projects I start in 2023!
TOODLES!
