Alright alright alrighty, another week, or 2, I've lost count. I'm still chugging away on this closet build, still slowly going crazy, but overall I've made A LOT of progress. If you're new here check out the previous installments of this shenanigans below.
All the designers say shiplap is out, but too bad. This is a 20 minutes from the beach house
So let's get into it. Part 12 I left off after dry fitting 5 out of the 6 upper storage boxes. I haven't built the 6th box yet, but the other 5 are now leveled and secured into the studs.
My supervisor had to check out the progress, she doesn't approve the lack of dresser top for the time being.
But Kenz, last week there was a white top on that dresser! Well. Yes. But that was what came with the Koppang Dresser and wasn't planned to be the final.
After some research, and budget analysis, I went with a 2'x4'x3/4" maple plywood. Not the fanciest, but it will work!
And here's where distaster struck... I tried a few different stains on the maple, and while it worked on the sample... on the full unit not so much. My mom likes it, she claims it's more her style, but it wasn't the look I was going for. I wanted the dark solid blue stain, but using wood conditioner before the stain yellowed the wood more than I had anticipated.
Some people will like this, but it's not the vision I quite had. Instead of redoing it at this point, I wanted to see how it would look with the shiplap and with the Indigo Batik color. Cue a trip to my local Sherwin Williams. I found this paint snap contraption and it was a game changer! No mess! Either way. I put a quick patchy base coat above the dresser and the accent wall where the large mirror will be.... this was so the gap between the faux shiplap boards wouldn't be white.
Now in a classic if you give a mouse a cookie fashion, I decided to do a Home Depot run at 7pm on a Saturday night... to which an employee ripped down 4 sheets of 1/4"x4'x8' sanded plywood into 7 1/4" strips and saved me a huge amount of time!
I used a metal straight edge as a spacer and my Ryobi brad nailer to put the shiplap up after cutting to size on a miter saw. Not too shabby for the first time with this. I still have some small pieces to put up and the underside of the supports above the dresser.
The vision is starting to come together! My mom thought I was putting shiplap vertical which is why she thought it would be ugly... but she approves of the horizontal. Also note, this shiplap will be painted Indigo Batik like the basecoat was. I ordered a paint sprayer that should be in next week because priming and painting this whole closet is going to be a challenge...
Speaking of paint... I am usually pretty good at keeping the fur monsters out of the room. But someone snuck in behind me and jumped straight into the paint tray... Cue throwing the phone, diving for the cat, and tossing him in the shower to keep him from getting paint over anything else... whic resulted in Scooby, myself, and my white shower covered in blue paint. Who's up for a game of Blues Clues?
But actually. I think this closet is going to need 2 pawprints to commemorate the hilarity that ensued.
I managed to get the paint up off the new closet floor, but I can't saw the same for the shower grout. Looks like I have a hot date with bleach and a toothbrush in the near future.
This is the current state, getting there! The dresser top looks great in the picture, but up close not so much. I plan on flipping it over and painting it white at this point and putting some simple black bars on the dresser instead.
I drew up a basic schedule of what's left... here's all the hot items on that list:
Install remaining shiplap
Build/mount final upper storage unit
Wall Repair/Backer Rod/Caulk for Pax
Shelf installation
Trim out units (make everything look built in!)
Prime
Paint
Clothing Rods
Mirrors
Wireless lights
Jewelry Organizers
Hampers
Hooks
Shelf dividers/Organizers
Rug Runner
Hangars
Final photos
Move in!
Lots to do! And my tripod/ring light came crashing down while recording the countertop sanding.. oops. I'll see if I can repair that this weekend or if another one is in the budget...
Here's the basic sketch I threw together at lunch the other day. I'm far enough into the build that I can finally see how some of the finishing touches will come together. That and sadly watching enough of The Home Edit on Netflix... that show isn't budget friendly ha... but either way this WILL look amazing. And surprisingly I have some nice things that deserve a little bit of air instead of being shoved in a storage bin...
I can see the light starting to appear at the end of the tunnel, I just hope it's not a train. Overall, I'm excited for this project to be done. I have a lot more that I want to complete, but it's time for some small projects after this one...
Blue and white everything!
TOODLES!
