Here we are! Week 1 of my first One Room Challenge. I heard about this challenge from doom scrolling on TikTok, so why not give it a try? This summer I have already finished redoing my guest room and an accent wall in my kitchen, so why not up the challenge and build the walk in closet I have always wanted?
First, let me introduce myself. My name is Kenzie, I'm your basic pumpkin spice loving millennial who finally has a house. Mom always told me to live in the house for a year before starting and major projects, so here we are a year later!
The project: Coastal Walk In Closet
Timeline: 8 weeks-ish
Week 1
Let's talk about the mood board.
I'm going for a blue and white beachy glam look, except the only "glam" item will be the light fixture. The above is a frosted sea glass light form Lowes and it's currently my top choice for this space.
Let's see the before photos.
Can you say trainwreck? I kept this door shut because trying to keep this room organized was a feat I wasn't capable of. Then, I came across @getknottydiy on TikTok. Her closet transformation was everything I wanted in a closet, lights, mirrors, built ins, and shiplap. She documented the process of completing everything herself, and if she can do it, why can't I?
So here we are! The layout of my closet is as seen below.
A decent amount of space, but an awkward one at that. The past few weeks I've gone back and forth on the design, what's going to fit the space best and what's feasible for me to complete myself. Originally the plan was to use the Ikea Pax system and trim it out. However, my closet is too narrow for the 22" deep units and Ikea has discontinued the 13". After weeks of searching, it looks like I have an answer. Lowes Blue Hawk system is just under 16" deep and 96" high. So far this system sounds ideal for 9.5' high ceilings! And here is the basic design currently.
I have shelves, single rod, double rods, a dresser, shoe storage, shiplap, coat hooks. Now let's see if I can bring it to life. Stay tuned for week 2, time for demo.
In the meantime, follow along on tiktok @macattkk, https://www.tiktok.com/@macattkk?is_from_webapp=1&sender_device=pc I post up to date videos of the project on there!
