Let's get it started in heeeeerrrreeeeee!

If you didn't sing that in Fergie's voice in your heard...dishonor on your cow.

Spring ORC Week 2 LEGGO. As always, if you're new here, make sure you check our other guest participants on the ORC BLOG. There's so many talented people completing every household project under the sun. There's someone doing a rooftop in BALI, how cool is that? Makes me miss my expat days, but anyways. If you missed it check out my week 1 post below!

Week 2... let's get into it!

2023 has been quite the ride so far... but I'm here with a new challenge and have acquired so many more skills since the last ORC. I kept my goals hopefully a tad more reasonable this time, but only time will tell. Will I actually finish in 8 weeks? My track record says no... but my brain says yes finish this before my trip home at the end of May.

Since I JUST finished my DIY Closet, I've needed a break... so this week my goals were simple.

  1. Clean out the laundry room (and shove all the junk somewhere that I won't lose)

  2. Remove wire shelving

  3. Tape up design

I really like taping designs on the wall, it helps me get a feel of how the final space will look and give me a change to make some modifications before ordering products. When coming up with ideas, I try to sketch everything to scale on graph paper. Must be my enginerd brain. But often lunchtime at work I'm sketching away because my squirrel brain can't stop coming up with ideas. I often have to mull them over for a few weeks [read: months] before I finally settle on a design.

So in true Kenz fashion, I've been designing this laundry room in my head since I was laying flooring in the closet all the way back in October. But I hadn't landed on the "final" color scheme until..... well 3 weeks from now. I don't think the final colors will be in place until I have whatever I'm using for a backsplash in hand.

Demo Time!

Shockingly... I'm on track with my schedule so far! I can't say the same for next week, but we'll approach that when we get there.

I ripped out the wire shelf, and honestly i don't really plan on fixing these holes since they will be covered anyways. Why waste the effort?

Tape designs help me visualize how the design fits in the real space. I can model everything on graph paper but I cannot get a real feel until I see it taped up. (And I don't want to spend any more time on the computer than I have to outside of my day job so no 3D modeling for me!)

Note my tape design has heights for both 30" and 36" tall cabinets here. After seeing the space, I'm going to lower the cabinets by 2" and go with the 36" cabinets. Here's my sketch to get a better idea of all the components to maximize storage without making the space feel too closed off. In typical engineer fashion, this is pretty close to scale, each box representing 3" x 3".

** Note this design is drawn for only the space above the washer/dryer. We're focusing above for now!

Now you'll have to go watch my tiktok or over to instagram to see how I got the tape up there.. and I am VERY curious how the heck I am going to mount those cabinets... I may have to ask for help on this one unless I unhook the washer/dryer. Let's just hope I don't bust the washer/dryer because that's the last thing I need to replace right now!

Coming Up!

Cabinets have been ordered! Click here to see what cabinet I went with. I really wanted to go with Lily Ann's White Shaker Elite, but for only 2 small wall cabinets, the shipping price just didn't seem worth the small order. Since this is only a laundry room, I'd prefer to save the money towards some bigger projects I have planned later this year. Can you say Fall ORC?

Anyways, I decided on two 18" w x 36" h x 12" d cabinets with some floating shelves in the middle, BUT they won't be ready for pick up until April 18...

I had wanted to mount the cabinets this

weekend, but it doesn't look like that's happening. So I'll have to rework my Week

3 plan a little bit. Right now I'm thinking it'll be another Home Depot trip to get the supplies for the shelves and the laundry cart I plan on building.

Next week's post I'll be talking more about the backsplash and will hopefully have a decision made!

As usual, taking one left turn at a time on these projects. I at least took more before videos this time with lots of different transition ideas... including the classic Penn State Hammer Toss...

TOODLES!
